Ninh Thuan Province probes illegal logging in protective forest

Ninh Thuan Province authorities are investigating the destruction of 20 hectares of forest cover in the Krong Pha protective forest area in Ninh Son District by local residents, to make way for coffee and fruit orchard cultivation.

The Department of Forest Management in Ninh Thuan Province said on Saturday that they were working with the Lam Dong Province Police Department in the Central Highlands to investigate the deforestation case further.

According to an initial investigation, 20 hectares of protective forest area located on the borders of Phuoc Binh National Park in Ninh Thuan Province and the Bi Dup-Nui Ba National Park in Lam Dong Province were chopped down by about 60 households, most of who came from Lam Dong Province.

Several big and valuable trees were chopped down, some of which are still lying at the destruction site as lumberjacks have not been able to transport them out of the forest.
