Police crack huge int’l football gambling network

Police in the central city of Da Nang are prosecuting six persons in   connection with their involvement with a huge international gambling network.

Major General Nguyen Van Son, director of police in Da Nang City led the investigation to uncover the gambling ring.

Hundreds of billions of dong in cash have been confiscated with many people being arrested for their involvement in the crime.

After 50 days of tracking down the culprits, anti-crime police cracked down and detained five persons in custody, namely, Lu Khanh Tung, 43, from An Hai Tay Ward; Le Duc Vu, 37, from An Hai Bac Ward in Son Tra District; Le Ky Hoan, 35, from Thach Thang Ward and director of Xuyen Dong Duong ( Trans-Indochina) Company; Pham Van Tuan Anh, 32, from Binh Thuan Ward in Hai Chau District; and Luong Thi Anh Dao, 44, from My An Ward in Ngu Hanh Son District.

Police were able to track the above men after investigating Nguyen Anh Cuong, 42, from Binh Hung Ward in Phan Thiet Town in the central province of Binh Thuan.

From Nguyen Anh Cuong police gained lead to Nguyen Van Vinh, 36, in Nam Duong Ward in Hai Chau District, chairman and director of Vinh Quang Nguyen Company. Police seized more than VND200 million (US$9,601) in cash, tens of credit cards, smart phones and laptops, all used for gambling online.

Since 2010, Nguyen Anh Cuong and several of his accomplices established contact with gambling operations worldwide and set up football gambling rings in Vietnam, each betting amounts in hundreds of billions of dong.

These gangs operated in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phan Thiet, Da Nang and Thua Thien-Hue. In addition, several of them specialized in collecting bet money and forced losers to pay their debts, often using violent means to do so.

Police are calling for all persons involved in these gambling rings to give themselves up and are offering clemency to those who voluntarily hand themselves  to the police or help in further investigation.
