10 meters from the scene, police officials found several pieces of bones, piled in a heap near a bon-fire.

According to a forest management official, even parts of the elephant skull had been hacked off.

The elephant was left behind after the rest of the herd migrated to Don Village in the central highland province of Dak Lak in 2001.

This is the ninth elephant to be killed in Dong Nai Province since 2008.
