Sugar plant fined over $93,000 for violating environment law

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the south-central Vietnamese province of Binh Dinh yesterday issued a fine of VND1.9 billion (US$93,600) on a local sugar factory for illegally discharge into Con river.

Additionally, environment watchdog suspended the plant for 4.5 months for causing serious environmental pollution. The plant was asked to remedy the pollution in 4.5 months and repair the discharge treatment system.
Test results showed that coliform count with 1,900 cubic meter a day and night in the wastewater was 8,000 times higher than the normal limit. Moreover, other indexes such as temperature, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and ammonia and sulfur levels, were 1.1 to 2.6 times higher than the normal limits.
