11 tourists died and 17 others were injured Friday night after a coach crash in southern Vietnam, the director of Lam Dong Hospital, Nguyen Ba Hy, said on Saturday.

Dai Ninh mountain pass-the most dangerous mountain passes in the central region due to the large number of blind bends

The vehicle, carrying a group of Russians and their interpreter from the highland tourist city of Da Lat to Phan Thiet, apparently overturned on a bend on Dai Ninh mountain pass, Binh Thuan Province.

"Seven Russians and a Vietnamese woman died immediately and another three tourists died after they arrived at the hospital," said Mr Hy.

He said the Vietnamese driver was among the wounded, four of whom were in a critical condition.

Witnesses said that the accident happened around early Friday evening. Local residents found the vehicle in a chasm in Dai Ninh.

They called workers from the near hydropower plant for help with emergency services arriving as soon as possible.

The rescue was hampered by the lack of light and the mountain’s difficult terrain.

The road where the incident happened is very deserted and is the shortest from Da Lat to Phan Thiet. Dai Ninh mountain pass is one of the most dangerous passes in the central region due to the large number of blind bends.

A link with 1A National Highway is being built but is yet to be completed.

Police have begun investigating the cause of the crash.
