AFD to Lend Viet Nam EUR123.4 Million

The French Development Agency (AFD) will provide Viet Nam with a EUR123.4 million (US$160 million) loan for railway projects and flood control systems, according to the French Embassy on Wednesday.

EUR80 million will go towards the building of a 12.5Kilometer (7.8 mile) light rail line in Hanoi, the capital's first mass transit system.

EUR32 million will help upgrade a 285Kilometer stretch of railway, the Yen Vien-Lao Cai line, between Hanoi and the Chinese border, which is scheduled for completion by 2011 or 2012.

The remaining EUR11.4 million will fund a project to strengthen flood defenses and build irrigation and sanitation canals and bridges in the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
