Alarming rise of iodine deficiency in Vietnamese people

Participants at a meeting held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Health discussed the alarming rise of iodine deficiency in Vietnamese people.

Iodine deficiency can be preventable by consumption of iodized salt

Representatives from the Department of Examination and Treatment under the Ministry of Health said that the percentage of people consuming iodized salt in Vietnam is less than 70 percent, while in the mountainous areas it is only 30 percent.

This is an alarming situation and needs to be addressed immediately.

Consuming iodized salt is an effective and proven method in preventing iodine deficiency in the body.

Iodine deficiency can cause brain damage and retardation in people all over the world, but is preventable by consumption of iodized salt.

People having insufficient thyroxine are less active, mentally slower and have learning disabilities. Babies born to mothers suffering from iodine deficiency are likely to become mentally retarded. This is incurable. People suffering from iodine deficiency often become physically dependent on others.
