The country sent 5,937 workers abroad in August, raising the total number of Vietnamese workers abroad at 45,634 in the first eight months, 50 percent of the Government’s plan, said the Overseas Worker Management Department.
Among them, Taiwan leads the list of the overseas markets with most Vietnamese workers at 13,202.
Second is South Korea: 5,549; Japan: 3,793, the United Arab Emirates: 3,051; Libya: 2,660; Macau: 2, 349; Malaysia: 1,666 and; Russia: 1484. Other markets account for the remaining 11,880 workers.
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs wants to achieve the country’s target of sending over 90, 000 workers abroad this year.
However, a number of businesses abroad have gone bankrupt leading to a high rate of unemployment when the global economic crisis ensued. The ministry may achieve 70-75 percent of the country’s target, said Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
