Authorities take heed to evacuate as storm makes landfall

As per plan, authorities in the central provinces of Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan today began a mass exodus for 75,647 households with nearly 400,000 locals as tropical storm Xangsane is poised to make landfall in the south-central coast.

Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development cum head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, said at an urgent meeting this morning held by the committee and the High Commander of Border Guard that local authorities must finish a mandatory evacuation for locals in the areas in the afternoon.
Administrations must announce schools to allow students to stay at homes when storm makes a landfall or heavy rain.
By this morning, localities reported that 759 households with nearly 2,000 people in Dong Xuan District of Phu Yen province had left their homes to safer shelters. Also according to plan, additional 75,647 households had moved to safe places.
The committee and the High Commander of Border Guard said at a meeting that border guards in sea provided information of the storm’s direction and development to 79,182 boats so that these boats can move out of dangerous areas.
However, fishing boats are still on sea; therefore, Minister Cuong ordered competent to guide them how to avoid the storm or find safe shelters by all means.
Mr. Cuong wanted a mandatory evacuation because the south-central coast has aquatic breeding farms in seas and cattle farms.
