The 64 km expressway, connecting the northern provinces of Bac Giang and Lang Son, has six lanes including two lanes for urgent works. The road is designed for vehicles to run at a speed of 100km per hour.
The expressway project has two parts, including the part of upgrading 110 kilometers of Highway 1 and the part of building the expressway with a total capital of VND12,189 billion (around US$518 million).
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung said that an expressway network development plan until 2020 with a vision toward 2030 has been approved by the Prime Minister. According to the plan, the nation will have 6,411 km of expressway by 2030, including 2,000 km of expressway ready by 2020.
