Can Tho authorities offer Tet gifts to disadvantaged families

Bui Van Hai, Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front in the Mekong delta city of Can Tho, said the organization has presented 2,600 Tet gifts worth VND300,000 each to disadvantaged families and those under social welfare schemes on occasion of  Tet Lunar New Year.

On this auspicious occasion, Can Tho City also handed over 79 free houses to the poor and needy people in the city.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross Society in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang also appealed to people to contribute generously to help disadvantaged families. 

The Society has so far presented 10,000 poor households with gifts each worth VND350,000-VND500,000. Kien Giang took out nearly VND7 billion( nearly US$ 335,000)  from its state budget to buy Tet gifts for families whose members became martyrs or sacrificed for the country’s freedom.

The Commander of the Ninth Region and the Army Sector of the Mekong delta province of Vinh Long handed over a charity house to Ms. Phan Thi Nguyet, a wife and mother of martyrs, in Vung Liem District.

Nguyen Trang Su, Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hong Ngu District in the Mekong delta province of Dong Thap, said residents along the Hong Ngu border crossing are busy preparing for Tet Lunar New Year.

This year they are happy as they have earned good profits from their pangasius crop. Shrimp farmers in the Mekong delta provinces of Ca Mau, Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh are making better preparations for Tet as prices of shrimp were high, at VND155,000-VND240,000 per kilogram, helping farmers rake in good profits.

Duong Tien Dung, Deputy Chairman of the People’s Committee in Ca Mau Province, said shrimp exports in 2011 reached US$910 million, helping improve the lives of farmers in the region, who are all spending to celebrate a joyful Tet lunar New Year.

Grapefruit farmers in the Mekong delta province of Soc Trang are also very happy this year as profits were good from bumper sales.
