Delegates that the Green Earth Hour Campaign 2014 meeting on March 25 agreed that citizens should work together to raise awareness about environmental issues.
Air pollution is currently a popular issue in the country, especially in HCMC, said Professor Nguyen Van Phuoc, head of the Environmental & Resource Institute. The largest contributor to air pollution is traffic and industry.
Air pollution is extremely dangerous causing adverse health effects such as cancer, asthma, bronchitis, cough, red eyes and weakened lungs, said Professor Phuoc. Air pollution is a major contributing factor to climate change.
The campaign “Turn Off Lights For One Hour” is expected to widely influence citizen awareness about decreasing energy usage and CO2 contribution, said Ly Viet Trung, deputy editor in chief of Sai Gon Giai Phong Newspaper.
Citizens should work together to limit causes of environmental pollution, said Nguyen Thanh Nhan, deputy general director of Saigon Co.opMart. This awareness should be carried out on a daily basis.
