Death penalty deleted on 8 crimes

Smuggling is among the eight offences removed from the list of crimes punishable by death

Vietnam has dropped the death penalty on eight crimes but still keeps it for drugs trafficking, and this took effect on July 2.

The State President office announced two new laws and the amendments to the Criminal Code Thursday in Hanoi.

Under the amended Criminal Code, those convicted of rape, fraud for appropriating property, smuggling, making and trafficking in counterfeit money, using drugs illegally, hijacking ships or planes, giving bribes, and destroying military weapons will not face a death penalty.

The amendments to the Criminal Code will take place on January 1, 2010, but the removes of these eight offences were effective on July 2.

The two new laws announced Thursday were the laws on Criminal Records, and the State’s Compensation Responsibility.
