Deputy PM spells out ministries’ tasks during typhoon season

The Government Office on May 30 dispatched to relevant agencies instructions issued by Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai to be fully prepared for possible super typhoons during the approaching storm season.

He instructed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to release early forecasts about storms and rising sea levels in every coastal province so that they can be prepared for the worst.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development should identify areas along the coast and river mouths likely to be flooded to arrange for shelters for people in case of flooding.

He ordered the Ministry of Construction to help residents fortify their houses and properties against storms.

Provincial and city people’s committees have been tasked with making evacuation plans in case of super typhoons based on forecasts from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The National Committee for Search and Rescue has been told to ensure timely rescue efforts and relevant ministries need to make preparations to minimize the damage caused by nature.

According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center, there might be fewer storms this year than last but they will come earlier. It also expects them to move in an erratic and unpredictable manner.

There could be a number of storms and tropical depressions within a short period, it has warned.
