Drug watchdog cracks down on Tamiflu hoarding

Pharmacies will be fined VND70 million (US$4,000) and have their license revoked if they distribute Tamiflu without clear origins or sell it at a high price, the Pharmaceutical Administration Department warned.

The penalties are stipulated in a Government decree issued last September on speculation, hoarding, gouging, giving false information, smuggling, and trade frauds.

Mr. Truong Quoc Cuong, head of the department, said department officials made surprise checks of drugstores including My Chau 1, My Chau 10, and Thanh Quang, after receiving a tip that some pharmacies were selling Tamiflu of unclear origins for a high price of VND1.4-1.5 million (US$77-80)for a box.

But they did not find any evidence that any of them broke the law, he said.
