Expert warns against buying rice seeds of unknown origin

Farmers should contact local agricultural agencies or farmers’ unions to buy high-quality rice seeds and should not buy seeds of unknown origin, Dr. Duong Van Chin, deputy head of the Mekong Delta Rice Research Institute, has said.

His warning follows an article in Sai Gon Giai Phong about many farmers buying fragrant rice of unknown origin.

During the current winter-spring season, many farmers have given up IR 50404 to turn to other varieties, he said, warning that not all the substitutes are fragrant varieties of good quality.

Only Jasmine 85 and VD20 are quality short-term fragrant varieties, he said. Exporters have favored six other varieties this year, namely OMCS 2000, OM 3536, OM 2527, OM 2717, VND 95-20, and IR 64, he said.

Three varieties that have proved the most efficient since 2006 are OM 4900, OM 6073 and OM 6162, he said.

The winter-spring rice crop requires around 160,000 tons of seeds for planting on 1.6 million hectares, he added.
