The organizing board of the 20th Anniversary of FPT Arena Multimedia (FPT University) has been fined VND4 million (US$240) for a vulgar performance by two of its students on Sept.14.
This was announced following an inquiry into the incident by officials of the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism in co-operation with the Ha Noi Police Department.
The inquiry found the organizing board had made two serious mistakes in violating a decree on cultural activities and public services. The first was to change the original lyrics of the famous revolutionary song “Doan Ve Quoc Quan” (soldiers of the National Defense Army) by well-known songwriter Phan Huynh Dieu; and the other was to allow the choreographing of a vulgar dance with semi-nude costumes.
The officials found these actions undermining Vietnamese culture and traditions.
The students told the officials that their dance was inspired by the movie “Borat”, a 20th Century Fox film that depicts male nudity in a new way.
More than 4,000 people, including leaders, staff and students of FPT and other guests attended the “Prelude to the age of 20” concert on September 14.
Two male students, both named Nguyen Viet Anh, wore very small loincloths while dancing and performing martial arts in front of the large audience. The investigators concluded this was indecent exposure.
A video of the event was even uploaded on to the popular Youtube site.
The officials said this performance demonstrated weak political and social consciousness on part of the organizing board and students of FPT University.
