Speaking at the conference, Standing Deputy Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem said that the population and housing census was a large-scale and important census, involving in all levels, agencies, social organizations and people.
The census is to serve for building the national targets and a number of sustainable development indicators; and make strategies, policy and socio-economic development plans in the next ten years (in the period of 2021-2030).
Regarding the preliminary results of the sixth population and housing census, Vice Director of Ho Chi Minh City Statistical Office Mr. Vo Thanh Sang informed that the city had 8,993,082 people and 2.5 million households, an increase of 1.8 million people compared to 2009 as of April 1, 2019.
Ho Chi Minh City is the country’s most populous hub, accounting for 9.3 percent of the country's population. Of which, the urban population is more than 7.1 million people; meanwhile, the rural population accounts for more than 1.8 million people.
The average population is 3.51 people per household. More than three- member- family tends to decrease while one-person- family is popular, up from 7.4 percent in 2009 to nearly 12.5 percent in 2019.
Statistics showed that several districts in Ho Chi Minh City had a very huge population such as Binh Tan District with a scale of over 784,000 people, Binh Chanh District with nearly 706,000 people, Go Vap District with nearly 677,000 people, etc.
Although the city has many immigration programs, most of the above districts are unbalance of population density.
The population of a district in Ho Chi Minh City is even equal or higher than population of a province, the country has 12 provinces with polulation ranging from 314,000 to 784,000 people.
District 4 has the highest population density in the city with nearly 42,000 people a square kilometer followed by District 10, District 11 and District 3 with population density of over 41,000 people per square kilometer, 40,830 people per square kilometer and nearly 38,700 people per square kilometer respectively.
Can Gio district is the lowest population locality with 102 people per square kilometer.
Regarding to the housing, there were 99.8 percent of households owning their home in the city, including 99.3 percent of households owning permanent or semi-permanent houses, 0.7 percent of households having temporary or simple houses.
The average housing area of Ho Chi Minh City is 19.4 square meter per person; however, the city still has nearly 189,000 households with about 663,000 people living in small houses, less than 6 square meter per person.
