HCMC to Deploy Military to Tackle Traffic Jams

Yesterday, Ho Chi Minh City mayor Le Hoang Quan chaired a meeting to discuss measures to ease traffic congestions and reduce traffic accidents in the city.

According to Mr. Quan, the city will soon deploy military forces to coordinate with traffic police in regulating traffic flows.

At the meeting, the city Department of Communications and Public Works reported that at present, residents have to put up with 54 spots in the city vulnerable to congestion. 

Last month, there were five severe traffic jams lasting 45 minutes, twenty-one between 15 minutes and 30, and 112 traffic accidents killing 81 and injuring 47 others.

It also reported on more than 140,000 traffic violators, 300 of whom were withdrawn driving licenses and 9,700 had their bikes impounded.
