Health Ministry Urged to Make Reforms

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung took part in a health sector meeting on Monday to celebrate Doctors’ Day in Viet Nam.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung addresses the meeting with the health sector on Feb 26 in Ha Noi

Addressing the meeting, the PM had high praise for the sector’s successful efforts so far to control bird flu, and the advanced technology that benefits a large number of poor patients from all over the country.

Around 52% of the population (44 million), including people with health insurance cards, people in remote and mountainous areas, poor people and children under six, have enjoyed free treatment, he said.

The PM went on to say that leaders in the healthcare sector should continue to reform hospital management and do their best to help control the price of medicine and prevent speculation in the pharmaceutical industry.

The health ministry should also allow the privatization of state-owned hospitals. Another urgent matter facing the health sector is human resources training, since Viet Nam has only 6 doctors for every 10,000 people, he said.
