Hydrofoil service stops operating on January 1, 2017

Starting January 1, 2017 the government issued regulation that all hydrofoil plying the HCMC to Vung Tau route will not be permitted to operate after 20 years this service was put into use in HCMC.

Some 100 crew members will temporary stop working.

Earlier, Vina Express and Quang Hung Transportation Company sent document to HCMC & Ba Ria Vung Tau departments of Transport to submit to the Ministry of transport for extension the hydrofoil operation.
According to Quang Hung Company, a hydrofoil with 150 passengers costs US$ 8million while the payback period is very long. In fact, passengers taking hydrofoil from Nha Rong wharf to District 4 accounts for 40 percent over its capacity.

The hydrofoils have put into operation from HCMC to Vung Tau for 20 years since the southern Waterway Management Division had been approved to open the route in February 1996.

During peak years, the number of passengers reached 500,000 per year with over 21 trips.
