“If hydroelectric plants had not released water, the central region would have been in extreme danger” Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai told the media on the sidelines of the ongoing National Assembly session in Hanoi on November 9.

He was responding to suggestions that the release of water had increased the water level in rivers and submerged many cities and towns in the wake of Typhoons Lupit and Mirinae during the last one month.
If water levels reach dangerously high levels, reservoirs have to release water or risk breaches which could cause unimaginable disasters, he said.
The Government would throw the book at authorities managing hydroelectric plants who do not follow regulations, he warned.
