The powerful explosion occurred below the earth’s surface at the lower section of the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant in the central province of Quang Nam on Sunday night.
According to Dr. Trieu, deputy chairman cum general secretary of the association, the hydropower plant area is vulnerable to earthquakes as it is positioned along a fault line. Some quakes were recorded in the area during the last two years.
Earthquakes producing explosions is a normal phenomenon when aftershocks occur. An explosion can be heard if the quake occurs close to the earth’s surface.
Aftershocks have been measured of below 3.5 on the Richter scale, along the fault line in the district.
