A solemn meeting was conducted at the Friendship Cultural Palace in Ha Noi on Monday to welcome the 63rd anniversary of August Revolution (Aug. 19) and National Day (Sep. 2).

Present at the meeting were Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former General Secretaries Do Muoi and Le Kha Phieu, President Nguyen Minh Triet, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, former National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An, Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee Chairman Huynh Dam and other high-ranking officials of the Hanoi authorities and the central government.
Also participating in the event were senior revolutionaries, Vietnamese heroic mothers, representatives of the Ha Noi people, and a delegation of Vietnamese overseas from 16 countries.
Earlier, a group of high-ranking officials of the Party and government led by General Secretary Nong Duc Manh paid a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Tomb and Ha Noi Martyrs’ Memorial.
Addressing the meeting, Ha Noi People’s Committee Chairman Nguyen The Thao said, “With a boundless respect and gratitude for President Ho Chi Minh, we deferentially commemorate him, the great teacher of the Vietnamese revolution and the founder and trainer of our Party. His great thought will shine forever, enlightening the path of development of the Vietnamese revolution.”
On the same day in Ho Chi Minh City, the Party Committee, People’s Council, People’s Committee and the Fatherland Front Committee held a large meeting to welcome the National Day.
The meeting was attended by some 1,000 delegates, including Vietnamese heroic mothers, labor heroes, army heroes, veterans, patriotic personalities, religious dignitaries and young people of the city.
Many high-ranking officials of the city participated in the meeting, including Party Committee Secretary Le Thanh Hai, People’s Committee Chairman Le Hoang Quan, People’s Council Chairwoman Pham Phuong Thao and Fatherland Front Committee Chairman Tran Thanh Long.
In her speech at the meeting, Mrs. Pham Phuong Thao said, “This is the most brilliant cornerstone in our nation’s history of building and protecting the country. It opened an era of national independence and socialism for our country. Proud of the great achievements gained by our nation, the party and people of the city have been trying their best to overcome many challenges to attain new achievements”.
About the current tasks, Mrs. Thao said the city was taking proper measures to restrain inflation, promote thrift, meet the economic targets, and secure social security. The city would also reinforce party organizations and improve the qualifications of civil servants, she said.
At the meeting, representatives of the city’s young people and veterans said they would strive to make bigger contributions to developing the city into a civilized, modern and socialist city.
Yesterday morning also saw a gathering held by the HCM City Union of Friendship Organizations to celebrate National Day. The event was attended by the city’s People's Committee Deputy Standing Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai and delegates from the city-based international agencies and foreign non-government organizations.
