The National Committee to Combat and Prevent AIDS, Drug Addiction and Prostitution launched the National Action Month for HIV/AIDS Control and a movement to involve everyone in local communities in the fight against the disease in Ha Noi yesterday.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, who chairs the committee, said that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is threatening lives and that the entire Government machinery must mobilize and take drastic action against it.
Activities to combat HIV/AIDS must be incorporated into the socioeconomic development programs of all central and provincial agencies, he said, adding families of HIV carriers and drug users should take part in such activities.
Some figures were released at the meeting: Of more than 132,000 people contracting HIV so far, 40,000 have died; 44 percent of drug users in the country contract HIV; two-thirds of all villages have HIV/AIDS patients.
The National Month of Action for HIV/AIDS Control, which began on November 10, will focus on direct communication activities, counseling, medical check-ups and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS preventive tools.
