The Customs Department of Quang Ninh Province on Vietnam-China border said Sunday that it had seized in Mong Cai City more than 1,000 kilograms of ivory believed smuggled towards China.

The department said Quang Ninh customs officers discovered the smuggling in Saturday night while they were patrolling along a border river. They found a boat navigated by a Chinese person carrying 221 tusk portions weighing 1,061 kg hidden in sacks.

The boat driver said another Chinese person hired him to transport the ivories to China.

Mong Cai City police were detaining the ivories and the Chinese boat driver.
