Overloaded power system in danger of collapsing

The breakdown of a 500kv cable system, caused power blackouts in all central provinces from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai and two Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak and Dak Nong within about an hour and a half, beginning 2:30am on July 8.

According to Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the power outage was caused by a voltage collapse and system frequency drop, which caused the electrical system to crash. By 3:15am the same day, the company completed repairs that returned electricity to full operation.

In Danang City, the power failure sent residents rushing into streets, due to the hot, muggy weather. Specially, the outage occurred during the second shift of the semifinal soccer game between Spain and Germany, annoying football lovers to no end.

The breakdowns also affected to thermal power plants like Ca Mau, Phu My, Buon Kuop, Song Hinh, Seporok 3, 4 and engine unit S7 of Uong Bi.

In related news, EVN said that it remains difficult to ensure the power supply, as reservoir water levels continue depleting due to the prolonged sweltering weather in the northern and central regions.

In addition, breakdowns at thermal power plants have returned. It is expected that repairs to these plants will be completed by the end of July.
