Overseas Vietnamese honored for research on Sea, Islands

On June 19, Tran Thang, an overseas Vietnamese living in America, was honored for his research work in collecting relevant documents on Vietnam’s Paracel and Spratly Islands by Phung Tan Viet, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Da Nang City.

Tran Thang is an expat Vietnamese and currently Chairman of the Institute of Culture and Education of Vietnam in the U.S. He also works for the Pratt & Whitney Company.

From July to October 2012, he spent US$13,000 to buy three atlases, 137 maps and more than 10 old maps of China which were printed and published by China several years ago.

Through these maps, readers can determine that the China border ends in Hai Nam Island and that Paracel and Spratly Islands belong to Vietnam.

Tran Thang has gifted all the maps to Da Nang Museum.
