Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visits HCM city

Party General Secretary and National Assembly Chairman, Nguyen Phu Trong paid a visit to the Party office on Jan 29 and met the people of HCM city as they prepare to welcome the 81st anniversary of the establishment of The Communist Party of Vietnam and the success of XI Party Congress, during the festive celebrations of Tet.

Politburo member and Secretary of the HCM City Party Committee Le Thanh Hai briefed members about the results of tasks implemented as part of the socio-economic development in the past 5 years. He said that the city had attained an annual economic growth of over 11 percent over the past five years, 1.5 times the country’s average rate, despite a weak economy in the country and a complex situation worldwide.

Comrade Hai added that the city’s economy had been boosted by growth in imports-exports, direct foreign investment and official development assistance (ODA). He also stated that the city is creating initiatives to enable a favorable mechanism to attract direct foreign investment (2.5 times more than the past 5 years).

However, he pointed out the challenges and difficulties facing the city, including increasing traffic congestion which was severely affecting people’s lives and the worsening flood conditions due to the impact of climate change.

The Party leader has expressed the hope that with resilient revolutionary traditional methods, the HCM City Party Committee would lead the way in the implementation of the 11th National Party Congress Resolution. He also confirmed that in 2010, though the world economy had slowed, the city’s per capita GNP was US$ 3,000. He hoped that in the New Year, the city Party Committee, authorities, people and the armed forces would further exemplify unity, overcome the many difficulties and continue to remain committed towards development.

He stressed how the city was always leading the way in important historical events and had made great contributions in past struggles for national liberation and reunification.
