Plywood producer slapped for discharging untreated wastewater

Binh Duong Province’s environment inspectors on July 31 suspended operations at a plywood producer, MDF Vietnam, for discharging untreated wastewater directly into Thi Tinh River.

The inspectors found that the firm did not have a wastewater treatment system and did not separate its sewage disposal from the storm drainage system.

Phan Dang Thuy, deputy chief inspector of the province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment, said that this company was warned and fined two times before, adding that it has seriously violated environmental laws.

In related news, the environment watchdog also found another pig breeder, Truc Dien Co., discharging wastewater into Ben Van Stream, where the wastewater reservoir at San Miguel Pure Foods was breached just a few days ago, releasing more than 233,000 cubic meters of wastewater into Thi Tinh River.

The firm’s director, Huang Jung Chua, admitted having discharged waste into the environment and promised to stop it and put the waste treatment system in use soon.
