PM approves of plan for new international airport

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved in principle to the Long Thanh International Airport project in Dong Nai Province.

The airport will be about 40 km’s away from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, 43 km’s east of Tan Son Nhat International Airport and 48 km’s from Vung Tau City.

The airport will be built in three phases, with construction set to begin in 2015.

The first phase will be built from 2015-2020 with an estimated capital of US$6.7 billion.

Once the first phase is complete, the Ho Chi Minh City Peoples’ Committee will continue to utilise and further invest in the Tan Son Nhat Airport. Transportation infrastructure to connect Long Thanh International Airport and Tan Son Nhat airport will also be constructed.

During the second phase in 2020-2035, the new airport will cover 90% of international flight routes and 20% of domestic routes. Tan Son Nhat Airport will cover 10% of international flight routes and 80% of domestic routes.

Once complete, Long Thanh International Airport will become one of the biggest transit airports in the region with a capacity to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo annually.
