Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has called off the SAS Royal Hotel in Ha Noi’s Thong Nhat Park, whose proposed construction stirred a lot of controversy.

The US$40 million project drew criticism from residents and architects who said giving land in a public park to a private company was illegal and protested that a reduction in Hanoi's green space went against the city master plan.
The city People’s Committee will now find another site for the hotel and recompense the investor who has reportedly spent US$14.5 million on the project so far.
PM Dung added that the officials who approved the project would be punished.
SAS Royal Hotel was to be a four-star hotel with five floors and 376 rooms, invested by Ha Noi SAS Royal Hotel Ltd and SIH Investment Limited, Singapore.
