Police Probe Vietnamese Human Traffickers

The southern province of Tay Ninh’s Police Department on July 27 transferred to the Ministry of Public Security documents on a human traffic ring that brought Vietnamese women to Malaysia for marriage, only to become sex workers.

The Tay Ninh Police Department has begun questioning four people in Hoa Thanh District involved in the ring, namely Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Vo Thanh Nhan, Nguyen Van Lam and Tran Thi My.

According to police, Nguyet cheated rural women in the province by promising them marriage in Malaysia, only to turn them into sex workers. Nguyet and the other three women under investigation also forged false documents certifying that the women were single so that she could ask for more money.

Police said at least 161 victims of human trafficking have been brought to Malaysia under similar shady pretenses. The case is currently under investigation.
