Poor student in Ca Mau province receive boat fee subsidy

A plan approved by the People’s Committee in the Mekong delta province of Ca Mau will benefit students who are disabled from chemicals, or children of needy households, war invalids and martyrs, said an official of the committee.

According to the chief of provincial people committee secretary, Vo Quoc Viet, Disadvantaged children in the southern province of Ca Mau will each receive VND150,000 a month as boat fee subsidy. 

The government will carry out pilot project on Ngoc Hien District of the province before moving to the entire province. Mr. Viet added that enterprises and benefactors support another project that providing a sum for a poor household to make a strong boat to carry students gratis.

According to the province’s statistics, approximately 30,800 students or 15.35 per cent of the total in Ca Mau typically go to school by boat. Since the beginning of the school – year 2008-2009, around 400 students have dropped out because they couldn’t afford the ferry fees.
