President commends SGGP’s campaign on Truong Son Route

President Nguyen Minh Triet August 31 sent a letter to Sai Gon Giai Phong, praising the newspaper’s campaign on rebuilding historical relics along Truong Son Route, also known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and helping veterans and people living along the road.

President Nguyen Minh Triet meets with  disadvantaged students in Hanoi on June 1, 2008.

The campaign, “Affectionate attachment to Truong Son,” was launched by Sai Gon Giai Phong in July after a group of journalists from the newspaper returned to Truong Son for a series of stories.

The journalists discovered that many relics honoring soldiers were forgotten and ethnic people along the road were still living in poor conditions.

Beginning the letter, the President said that the campaign was very meaningful work, aiming to call on the whole country to join hands and rebuild historical relics and helping veterans and people living on the road.

In the letter, the President pressed the important role of Truong Son in the resistance to save the country.

“The anti-American Resistance Truong Son Route was one of the hardest, fiercest and longest battlefields, where direct confrontation occurred between an economic and militarily powerful country equipped with modern weapons and instruments and a country equipped with people war strength and the will to protect the country’s independence and freedom,” said the President.

“In the confrontation, Truong Son soldiers made important contributions in the victory of the 1975 Spring Offensive and Uprising, liberating the whole southern region and reuniting the country,” the President added.

Besides honoring Truong Son soldiers’ brilliant feat of arms, the President said that Truong Son was also one of the places that suffered most bombings, losses and damages.

“Up to now, although we have made a lot of attempts, we have still met difficulties in collecting martyrs’ remains, restoring relics honoring martyrs and helping ethnic minorities living along Truong Son road because of huge and complicated mountainous terrain,” the President said.

“Sai Gon Giai Phong’s campaign is a kind gesture, creating an opportunity for people to express gratitude and pay tribute to heroic martyrs who lost their lives for the country

“The campaign also makes an opportunity for people to share responsibility with the Party, State and Government in taking care of veterans’ families, injured soldiers and families who contributed in the revolution, and restoring historical relics and building monuments to martyrs”.

At the end of the letter, the President expressed his desire for the success of the campaign and wished good health to Sai Gon Giai Phong’s staff and its readers.

The Truong Son Route was a strategic route to support southern people in the fight against the US army. It was built in 1959 and was not a single route but a complex system of roads and sea routes, through which millions of tons of food and arms were transported to the south.

According to the U.S. National Security Agency's official history of the war, the route system was "one of the great achievements of military engineering of the 20th century."
