The Vietnamese Government will carry out investigation into the tardy forecasting of typhoon Chanchu, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dzung told agencies on the sidelines of the National Assembly Session.

Following the massive loss of life at sea caused by typhoon Chanchu, the Government asked relevant agencies to report on what they have done to solve the problem as well as provide explanations for their shortcomings in weather prediction. Enclosed with the reports are their plans to cope with the situation in the coming time.
According to Mr. Dzung, the Government must find out major reasons for the tardy forecast of typhoon, hold right person responsible for the situation to impose appropriate sanctions.
The Government decided to support typhoon victims and practical activities will be discussed in detail at the Government’s regular meeting on May 31, he said.
Also on May 31, Mr. Nguyen Tan Dzung will work with other Government members to find out feasible and practical measures for improving storm forecasting.
Recently, the Government has issued a document to call for a check-up of storm forecast and the National Hydrometerological Forecast Center will present its report to the Government on May 31, he said.
Regarding concerned authorities imputation, Mr. Dzung said, "The whole nation is feeling great anguish because of the casualties and material losses caused by typhoon Chanchu. However, we defined that our very first task is to rescue and support fishermen’s lives, and then carry out examination of the entire case including causes, concerned authorities’ responsibilities and solutions to overcome the situation."
"As shown in its dealing with some precious storms, the Government has for times drawn experience to help solve immediate and long-term consequences of typhoons, proving its responsibility for and great care of the people’s lives," Mr. Dzung added.
|Director of National Hydrometerological Forecast Center Shy Away from His Pos|
On May 30, Vietnamese Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Mai Ai Truc signed a decision, in which he appointed Mr. Bui Minh Tang to the position of National Hydrometerological Forecast Center Director.
As shown in the decision, Mr. Le Cong Thanh, the center’s former director, will be arranged with new work after investigation of typhoon Chanchu forecasting is finished. Before receiving the decision, Mr. Le Cong Thanh had applied for resignation.
Also on the same day, the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment held a meeting to discuss adjustments in weather forecast. Accordingly, the National Hydrometerological Forecast Center will make forecasts more than the current 24 hours in advance and expand its scope to a larger one.
