Two vessels collide on river near HCMC, causes oil spill

A vessel carrying 700 tons of engine oil from Sai Gon Port to Vung Tau on a tributary of the Dong Nai River collided last night with another vessel carrying vegetable oil in the reverse direction.

The Gia Dinh – SG4193’s second hold sprung a serious leak and hundreds of tons of oil spilled into the Long Tau River.

The other ship, Imextrans 16, did not suffer any damage.

Rescue forces have plugged the leak and towed the two vessels ashore.

Official agencies are investigating the cause of the accident and cleaning up the spill.
