U Minh Thuong National Park belongs to Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve, which was recognized by UNESCO on October 27, 2006.
According to scientists, this mangrove ecosystem is on a peat swamp and habitat of many wild and rare animal species.
Mr. Bui Cach Tuyen, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said that Vietnam is one of the four countries participating in a Peat Land project. U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang Province and U Minh Ha National Park in Ca Mau Province are two examples.
In particular, U Minh Thuong National Park is the first ASEAN Peat Land Heritage Park in the ASEAN region.
