An undersea power cable system from the southern province of Kien Giang to Phu Quoc Island will be built to supply electricity, according to a directive by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to direct the Electric of Viet Nam to prepare, evaluate and develop this project for the island, which is located in the Gulf of Thailand, 62 nautical miles (115 km) from Rach Gia City of Kien Giang Province.
He also approved a plan of giving subsidy on power prices to the island and allowing the island authorities to adjust prices for the volume of electricity consumed beyond the limit of subsidy.
Power price adjustment will be carried out under instructions by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The Prime Minister also assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to direct the Viet Nam Coal and Minerals Group to prepare a project for a coal-fueled thermal power plant in the island.
