Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet has awarded a third-class Labor Medal to Swiss engineer Toni Ruttimann for his outstanding contributions to the construction of many suspension bridges in Ben Tre Province.

Since 2004, the Swiss man has teamed up with his friend Yin Sopul, a Cambodian, to help build bridges in the Mekong Delta province. He has provided materials worth more than US$500,000 for the construction of 40 bridges, which cost about US$762,500 in all.

The suspension bridges are 1.6 meters wide and 42-84 meters long.

Nearly 100,000 locals in Ben Tre’s outlying areas have benefited from the bridges.
