Students, scientists, and astronomy buffs gathered at the Education University’s Faculty of Physics in Hanoi on July 22 to view the once-in-a-century solar eclipse.

The Vietastro Club had set up special camera-telescopes but since so many people came they had to take turns.

With the sunny and cloudless weather facilitating the viewing many also recorded the total solar eclipse with their own camera and cell phones.

Young people in Hanoi also got together with home-made equipment. At the My Dinh Stadium, some young entrepreneurs sold special viewing glasses for VND20,000-30,000.

Nguyen Duc Phuong  from the Vietastro Club said the event stimulated young people’s passion for astronomy while for scientists, it was an opportunity to do research on the atmosphere and test Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity.
