FPT, a leading telecoms company in Viet Nam, has won exclusive television rights from FIFA to broadcast the World Cup 2006 in Viet Nam.
FPT and Viet Nam Television (VTV) had earlier bid for the television rights and the former succeeded, Viet Nam News Agency reported.
Nguyen Thanh Luong, director of the VTV advertising department, said that VTV had send a 10-strong team to FPT to negotiate about re-buying the television rights. He added any local television station wishing to air any of the World Cup’s 64 matches would have to buy the rights from FPT.
FPT had paid a multinational corporation contracted by the world’s football governing body FIFA around US$3 million to buy the exclusive television rights, Mr. Luong added.
An FPT executive said Ho Chi Minh City Television is in talks with FPT for the rights.
