Hosts earn light defeat in Asian Women’s Cup opener

Taking on reigning champions China in an opener of the Asian Women’s Football Championship Wednesday, hosts Viet Nam played a good game and lost 0-1.

Viet Nam received strong support from fans at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City and managed to prevent the Chinese women from scoring in the first 30 minutes. Then, Xu Yuan fired for China in the 31st minute with a shot outside the penalty box.

After the break, the Chinese side put more pressure on Viet Nam and the ball was often in the field part of the home side. China also missed some scoring chances. A few minutes before the final whistle, Chinese forward Han Duan was sent off with a red card after she beat a Vietnamese player.

Also in Group A, DPR Korea crushed Thailand 5-0 in the earlier match. DPR Korea took the lead in the group, followed by China.
Thursday’s matches are Australia vs. Taiwan, and Japan vs. Republic of Korea.

The Asian Women’s Football Championship is staged in HCMC from May 28 to June 8 with the participation of the eight teams. In Group A, top seeds China and DPR Korea are the favorites for the semifinals. Meanwhile, Group B is a real competition among Australia, Japan and South Korea.
