England Call up Lescott for Qualifiers

England's Joleon Lescott (back) challenges Albania's Vioresin Sinani

England have called up Everton defender Joleon Lescott for crucial UEFA EURO 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia after veteran centre-back Sol Campbell withdrew due to injury.

Head coach Steve McClaren has already lost David Beckham, Frank Lampard and Kieron Dyer in the last week as he prepares for the two matches on 8 September and four days later that could make or break his England reign.

Lescott, has made an impressive start to the new season, helping Everton tie local rivals Liverpool on points at the summit of the Premiership. On Saturday, he scored a late winner as David Moyes' side beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1.
