Goals from Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley put Rangers joint top of Group E with Barcelona, 2-0 winners at VfB Stuttgart thanks to Carles Puyol and Lionel Messi.

Although a cautious approach by Roma ensured there would be no repeat of the 7-1 drubbing they received at Old Trafford last season, Rooney's superb finish gave hosts United three points and top spot in Group F.

Sporting Lisbon are joint second with Roma after goals from Tonel and Anderson Polga earned a 2-1 win at Dynamo Kiev, who have no points from two matches.

Arsenal completed a good evening for British clubs with a 1-0 triumph at Steaua Bucharest that put them in the driving seat in Group H.

Sevilla bounced back from their opening defeat at Arsenal with a 4-2 home victory over Slavia Prague.

In Group G, two first-half goals from Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic handed Inter Milan a 2-0 win at home to PSV Eindhoven while Fenerbahce went top with a 2-2 draw at CSKA Moscow.

Three Brazilians scored in Moscow, Alex giving the Turkish champions an early lead and Deivid snatching a late equaliser after Serbian midfielder Milos Krasic and Wagner Love had netted for CSKA.
