Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper, the organizer of the annual Golden Ball Awards, will not strip the 2008 Golden Ball title from goalkeeper Duong Hong Son, the paper’s editor-in-chief and head of the organizing committee said April 8.

Editor-in-chief Tran The Tuyen said, “Goalkeeper Duong Hong Son was voted to win the 2008 Golden Ball of Vietnam by football experts and sports journalists.”

“I think it was regret that Son has violated his club T&T Hanoi’s regulations and was fined for the act by his club T&T Hanoi after receiving the valuable title. But it is not because of this that we will reconsider the issue of the title.”

“However, this is a lesson for footballers, especially those who have achieved titles as they have become persons of the general public,” he said.

On March 23, Son, the national team’s main keeper, received the 2008 Golden Ball for what he performed during the year, in which Vietnam won the Southeast Asian Championships for the first time.

One week later, he was involved in a fighting among some players of his club T&T Hanoi and Ninh Binh Club. His club suspended him for two matches and fined VND10 million (about US$580).

Then, the Vietnam Football Federation reportedly asked the award organizer to reconsider Son’s title.
The newspaper is of the view that the goalkeeper earned the title for all he performed last year, while his scandalous act took place this year.
