Top Athletes in Vietnam honored in 27th SEA Games

Winners in the 27th SEA Games and Asian and World Competitions will be representing Vietnam in the Asian Games 2014 and Olympics 2016.

These events aim to provide Vietnamese athletes a platform to compete in local and international competitions.

In the last year, Vietnamese sports harvested great achievements thanks to young talent athletes’ generation as well as master ones in the local and international competitions.

Following are the honored athletes of Vietnam Sports Delegation of 27th SEA Games:

Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won three gold medals and two records in the SEA Games and will be representing Vietnam for the swimming competition in the 2016 Olympics.  She is honored as one of the most impressive athletes of Vietnam Sports in 2013.

Vien was born in Nov. 9, 1996 in Can Tho City. At a young age, Vien won medals in women’s local and international swimming competitions.

Vien won 145 medals in local and international competitions.  These competitions include the 5th Congress of Sports of Southeast Asian Students Festival the 2013 Asian Youth Game in Nanjing, China.

She is currently serving for the Vietnam’s People Army.

American professionals expect Vien’s swimming to rival others in Asian Congress of Sports.

Lam Quang Nhat, 16, was honored as the most excellent athlete of Vietnam Sports in 2013. He won a gold medal at the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle swimming category at the 27th SEA Games, competing all-star athletes such as Teo Zhen Ren from Singapore and Sim Welson and Kevin Yeap from Malaysia.

We believed he would rank at top 4 but exceeded expectations when he won first place, said swimming coaches.

Nguyen Van Lai won the gold medal during the 10,000-meter swim in the SEA Games. He beat competitors with a record of 29 minutes and 44 seconds.

Lai also won a gold medal for the men’s 5,000-meter swim.

It is difficult to win the gold medal in that category, said Lai.  Vietnamese athletes rarely beat Thai, Indonesian and Filipino athletes.

Nguyen Van Lai, Vu Thi Huong and Quach Thi Lan also won medals in the track and field division.

Vu Thi Huong, nicknamed “Speed Queen”, won two gold medals in the 200-meter dash of the SEA Games.

Vietnamese Sports Delegation hopes that Huong will get high achievements at the Asian Games Incheon 2014.

In the same category, although Quach Thi Lan won a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter dash, she is considered as one of best athletes in 2013.

Thach Kim Tuan won a gold medal for the weightlifting division in the SEA Games.  He beat competitors by lifting 285 kilograms and broke record for men’s snatch at 129 kg and men’s clean and jerk competition at 285 kg.

He is voted as one of the brightest stars of Vietnam by journalist and crowded Vietnamese fan.

Hoang Xuan Vinh, 40, won two gold medals in the men’s 10-meter shoot and 50-meter pistol shooting division at the SEA Games.

Vinh was the first Vietnamese shooter to participate in the Olympics 2012 held in London. He has won a medal every year in SEA Games since 2000. He is currently serving for the Vietnam’s People Army and is highly respected by his peers.

Nguyen Trong Cuong won a gold medal in the men’s 87 kg martial art division in the SEA Games. He won this by winning 5 sequential competitions.
