City welcomes 1.5 mln foreign tourists in five months

HCM City had more than 1.5 million international visitors in the first five months of this year. Total turnover was VND14.6 trillion (US$900 million), a 40 percent increase compared to last year, said Ms. Dong Thi Kim Vui, director of city’s Department of Tourism.

Most foreign visitors to Viet Nam were from the U.S., Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia, China, Canada, France, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Over the next two years, the city will focus on promoting itself globally as a tourist destination, the People’s Committee has said.

There will be major tourism events including the Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Expo in October and a “Taste of the World” festival celebrating domestic and international cuisine in December.

The city is expected to attract 3 million international tourists in this year.
