A Hong Kong Express Airline plane carrying 40 passengers from Macau arrived at Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong on Monday as a precursor to regular direct flights between the two cities.
The Macau–Hai Phong service will be available twice a day starting soon. The planes that will be used can fit 76 passengers and make the journey in two hours.
Until now anyone wanting to travel from Macau to Hai Phong in the shortest time possible had to get a boat to Hong Kong then board a flight to the northern Vietnamese port city.
Mr. Tran Trung Dzung, Director of the Hai Phong City Tourism Department, said the visa and customs formalities and the international health checks at the airport would be carried out quickly.
Mr. Dzung’s department says direct flights between Hai Phong and Pusan in the Republic of Korea are in the planning stages, as is a direct air service to Thailand.
