Around 1,000 passengers were traveling aboard the ship. Port authorities said it was the first time that a giant vessel had berthed there. The port cost about VND 645 billion (US$40 million) to build.

The ship, regarded as the most luxurious and modern cruise liner in Viet Nam, was launched by state-owned Vinashin Ocean Shipping Company last December.

Vinashin bought the vessel from Italy at a cost of VND1.3 trillion (US$81.25 million). It is equipped with modern facilities, has hundreds of cabins and areas decks for autos and aircraft.

Vinashin plans to make the cruise a daily service.
